1772: Lord Chief Justice Mansfield ruled that any slave setting foot on
English soil or territory was automatically a free man.

1807: Bill for the Abolition of Slave Trade(February 11) House of
Commons in British Parliament

1807: Bill passed in the British House of Lords
British Activists: William Wilberforce
Lord Mansfield
Granville Sharp
Zachary Macauley
Others include John & Thomas Clarkson Thomas Peters, Gustavus Vassa
The Prince of Wales School at Kingtom, kept the memory of these activists alive by naming the school Houses after their names.

1940s /1950s: The Settlers Union
Formation of the original group of Krio union and was active until Sierra Leone Independence April 27, 1961
Make up: descendants of settlers: “Black Poor”, Nova Scotians and Maroons,
Members included:

1951: The State of Sierra Leone
Peninsula Protectorate
‘de jure’ (legally) /colonial subjects Aborigenes/Natives

-The National Council/Sir Beresford Stooke (Krio party)
-Stevenson’s Constitution introduced the new legislative council with Sir Milton-Margai to bring the protectorate and colonial subjects together and solve political unrest.

1961: The Settlers Union was resurrected to take their concerns to the British Parliament of political independence to the Secretary of State for the colonies
Representatives: Dr. Prince Buck
Mr. Jonathan Rose
Concern: unequal political status between the British subjects and the peoples.
Outcome: Pathetic outcome by the colonial office in London, frustrated reps “fait accompli”. The union became defunt.
No provision was made for the Krios in the independence constitution.
The Settlers Union lost momentum, exodus of some Krios to England (mother country) and USA.


1990: The Settlers Union was restored under a new name “Krio Descendants Yunion”
Conviction: Western Area of Freetown is their bona fide homestead
A clarion call was made for the “Krio Discendant Yunion”
Motto initiated “leh we ep we sef’/Let us share one another’s burden

1991: President Mr. George T Robinson
Members included Samuel Stober Taylor
Wilward Arthur Cummings
Charles B. Jones
Rosalind Claudius-Cole
George Fewry
Eman Fraser Davies
H. M. James

1991: KDY became a registered charity in Freetown with branches in the peninsula
villages. Its goals are:

To have a home for KDY (national Office/cultural center in Freetown)
Scholarships to disadvantaged children of Krio descent
Change in the Provincial land act of 1996
To set up a branch in every peninsular village
To improve social status of Krio families
To obtain its Non-Governmental Status (NGO) in Sierra Leone


1993: President: Mrs. Cassandra Garber J.P-Present

2000: Krio Discendant Yunion Alamanc (historical manuscript) was launched.
A family keepsake and a major fundraiser for KDY

2007: The 5th affiliate association of KDY, Fritong was formed
