Journey from the past to the present, from heritage to habitat at the Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center: Rich in natural, cultural and historical resources, Caw Caw was once part of several rice plantations and home to enslaved Africans who applied their technology and skills in agriculture to carve the series of rice fields out of cypress swamps. Our program this morning will be on Carolina Gold. We will examine the various steps required for the cultivation of rice, the roles and influences of enslaved Africans and African Americans on the process, and how people historically and presently interact with environments associated with rice cultivation. After our morning presentation, we will have a picnic lunch, and then proceed to Boone Hall Plantation Exploring The Gullah Culture" (2PM show only on Sunday) Boone Hall introduces the versatile Joseph Blake, performing daily in our Gullah Theater. Joseph, who is an original Gullah descendant from Red Top near John's Island, S.C., has been entertaining audiences for almost a decade with presentations that bring the Gullah Culture to life. Boone Hall Plantation is the only plantation in the S.C. Low country to present a live presentation of this unique culture adapted by African slaves. These entertaining and educational performances take place in The Gullah Theater, which is located at the end of Slave Street. Slave Street and History Tour: This self-guided tour begins at the tip of Slave Street located out in the front of the Plantation Home and is a historical look at the living quarters, historic relics, and lifestyle of the slaves that lived here at Boone Hall. What really makes this exhibit unique is that this story will be told using eight of the original slave cabins located on Boone Hall Plantation. Each of the cabins on Slave Street presents different themes in telling the black history story. Visitors are able to see the different aspects of daily life, how they worked and lived, struggles that were faced, as well as follow different periods of historical progression from the beginning all the way up to present day. Life size figures, pre-recorded narratives, audiovisual presentations, photos, pictures, biographical information, and actual historical relics, are interwoven and meshed together in displays throughout the cabins presenting this new exhibit. Themes for each cabin are as follows: Cabin 1 – Praise House Cabin 2 – Slave Crafts Cabin 3 – Their Life & Family Cabin 4 – Archaeological Discoveries Cabin 5 – Their Work and Life Cabin 6 – Emancipation & Freedom Cabin 7 – Struggle For Civil Rights Cabin 8 – Heroes and Leaders After our visit to Boone Hall Plantation, enjoy browsing in the Market with dinner at Bubba Gump Seafood Restaurant.
