Krio Descendants Union; Health Committee Report on York Clinic
Spring 2009
The Krio Descendants Union of Texas (KDU Texas) sponsored the York Health Center Restoration Project in September 2007. This was done upon the recommendation of Krio Descendants Yunion (KDY Fritong) to adopt York Healthcare Clinic as the first project for KDU.
KDU initiated the project with a due diligence study performed by three of its members in November 2007. The team enthusiastically visited the York site to confirm that the project met the requirements of KDU's mission, and met at that time with Ministry of Health officials including Dr. Soccoh Kabia - Minister of Health, Mr. Sheku Tejan Koroma - Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Yayah Conteh – NGO Liaison, and Dr. Arthur Williams the Chief Medical Officer, to obtain permission to proceed with the renovation.
Subsequent KDU visits by various KDU members were made in December 2007 and in June 2008. At the later visit we teamed with Daystar-adopt-a-village volunteers and KDY Fritong to conduct an all day medical outreach at the clinic for York and its surrounding villages.
At our fundraising event during the Krio Family Weekend in Sept 2008 (Labor Day Weekend), in Dallas, Texas, we raised approximately $12,000 to fund the repairs. Thanks to the generous donations of our patrons, donors, and well-wishers.
These funds were secured until reviews of bids from three local contractors were completed. A suitable contractor was identified after another visit by KDU members in January 2009.
On March 10, 2009, KDU initiated a contract with the contractor, with KDY Fritong as our local agent, to proceed with the renovation. We await the execution of the contract in Freetown by end of March 2009, at which time KDY will transmit the initial installment to the contractor to start the project.
Please see below current pictures of the clinic. Pictures will be posted accordingly to show various stages of the renovation as it progresses.
