2008-2009 Scholarship Report
The Krio Descendants Union of Texas (KDU Texas), in October 2008, initiated an Education project that awards scholarships to deserving students in Sierra Leone. This is pursuant to one of the group's Bylaws to establish a scholarship fund to aid and assist low-income families in providing quality education for children of Krio descent.
At our fundraising event during the Krio Family Weekend in Sept 2008 (Labor Day Weekend), in Dallas, Texas, our Patrons, Guests, and Well-wishers made generous financial pledges toward the scholarship fund.
Thirteen(13) scholarships of $120.00 each were awarded to students in Freetown for the 2008/09 school year from donations made to the Scholarship Fund. In addition, 3 scholarships sponsored by KDY of Freetown were renewed for the current school year. This brought the total number of scholarships awarded for the 2008/09 school year to a record number of 16. An Awards ceremony was held in Freetown on Jan. 29th, 2009 for the scholarship recipients (pictures below)
Adopt-A-School
Much needed school supplies in the amount of $120.00 were also donated to the Primary School at Bathurst Village.
Donated text books shipped by KDU Dallas arrived in Freetown in March 2009 and are being distributed to schools for use.
